God Calls Us to Worship

* Call to Worship …………………………………………………… Psalm 96:1-10

* God’s Greeting ………………………………………. 1 Thessalonians 1:1b-2

* Opening Prayer

* Song of Praise .……… All People That on Earth Do Dwell …….. #100:1-4

1. All people that on earth do dwell,
sing to the LORD with cheerful voice.
Serve him with joy, his praises tell,
come now before him and rejoice!

2. Know that the LORD is God indeed;
he formed us all without our aid.
We are the flock he surely feeds,
the sheep who by his hand were made.

3. O enter then his gates with joy,
within his courts his praise proclaim!
Let thankful songs your tongues employ.
O bless and magnify his name!

4. Because the LORD our God is good,
his mercy is forever sure.
His faithfulness at all times stood
and shall from age to age endure.

God’s Will for Our Lives

Reading of God’s Law ……………………………… 1 Thessalonians 5:14-22

Prayer of Confession …………………………………. Based on Psalm 5:1-12

Minister: Hear our words and our groanings, O Lord. Give attention to our cry for mercy.

People: You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.

Minister: You destroy those who speak lies; you abhor the bloodthirsty and deceitful. But, O Lord, we are evildoers. We are boastful, deceitful and bloodthirsty.

People: By your mercy alone, by the abundance of your steadfast love may we enter your house.

Minister: Because of your Son, O Lord, let us find refuge in you. Take away our sins and let us sing for joy.

ALL: Cover us with your favor as with a shield. For the sake of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon …………………………………. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11

God Hears Our Prayer

Reading of Creed …………. Heidelberg Catechism 52, 88-90 (pp 880, 888)

Q. 52. How does Christ’s return “to judge the living and the dead” comfort you?
A. In all distress and persecution, with uplifted head, I confidently await the very judge who has already offered himself to the judgment of God in my place and removed the whole curse from me. Christ will cast all his enemies and mine into everlasting condemnation, but will take me and all his chosen ones to himself into the joy and glory of heaven.

Q. 88. What is involved in genuine repentance or conversion?
A. Two things: the dying-away of the old self, and the rising-to-life of the new.

Q. 89. What is the dying-away of the old self?
A. To be genuinely sorry for sin and more and more to hate and run away from it.

Q. 90. What is the rising-to-life of the new self?
A. Wholehearted joy in God through Christ and a love and delight to live according to the will of God by doing every kind of good work.

Congregational Prayer

Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you taught us to pray and to offer our petitions to you in his name. Guide us by your Holy Spirit, that our prayers for others may serve your will and show your steadfast love.

Let us pray for the church. May the ministers and other leaders be faithful and bold in preaching the true gospel. Keep congregations one in faith and service, and proclaiming the good news to the world. Mature us in the faith through your Word and Spirit, so we may more and more become images of Christ. Pray especially for Rev. Mike Brown, his wife and his son, pastor of a church in Milan, Italy, as they minister to their congregation in the midst of the lockdown.

Let us pray for those who govern us. Direct those who make, administer, and judge our laws—the president and others in authority among us—that, guided by your wisdom, they may lead us in the way of justice, righteousness, peace and prosperity.

Let us pray for friends and families. Bless those we love, our friends and families, that, drawing close to you, we may be drawn closer to each other.

Let us pray for the sick, those who sorrow, that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come, shall separate them from your love. Through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Song of Thanksgiving..Day of Judgment! Day of Wonders!…. #387:1-4 (tune: #378)

1. Day of judgment! Day of wonders!
Hark! the trumpet’s awful sound,
louder than a thousand thunders,
shakes the vast creation round.
How the summons
will the sinner’s heart confound!

2. See the Judge, our nature wearing,
clothed in majesty divine;
you who long for his appearing
then shall say, “This God is mine!”
Gracious Savior,
own me in that day as thine.

3. At his call the dead awaken,
rise to life from earth and sea;
all the pow’rs of nature, shaken
by his looks, prepare to flee.
Careless sinner,
what will then become of thee?

4. But to those who have confessed,
loved and served the Lord below,
he will say, “Come near, ye blessed,
see the kingdom I bestow;
you forever
shall my love and glory know.”

God Declares His Truth

Scripture Readings…….. Joel 2:1-7; 1 1 Thess 5:1-5; 2 Thess 1:5-11

Sermon……………………………………………………. The Day of the LORD

* Song of Response…… O Lord, How Shall I Meet You!….. #259:1, 2, 4, 5 (tune: #325)

1. O Lord, how shall I meet you,
how welcome you aright?
Your people long to greet you,
my hope, my heart’s delight!
O kindle, Lord Most Holy,
your lamp within my breast
to do in spirit lowly
all that may please you best.

2. Love caused your incarnation,
love brought you down to me;
your thirst for my salvation
procured my liberty.
O love beyond all telling,
that led you to embrace,
in love all love excelling,
our lost and fallen race!

4. Sin’s debt, that fearful burden,
let not your souls distress;
your guilt the Lord will pardon
and cover by his grace.
He comes, for men procuring
the peace of sin forgiv’n,
for all God’s sons securing
their heritage in heav’n.

5. You come, O Lord, with gladness,
in mercy and goodwill,
to bring an end to sadness
and bid our fears be still.
In patient expectation
we live for that great day
when a renewed creation
your glory shall display.

God Blesses Us
