1 John Psalms Sermons

Morning Worship Service (April 11, 2021)

God’s word assures us that that we who are true believers “are God’s children now.” However, we still have the sinful nature in us at war against the new righteous nature that the Holy Spirit has given us. So we strive with all our might and the power of the Spirit to live holy, righteous and godly lives in obedience to God’s laws.

Morning Worship Service (March 21, 2021)

All our treasures on earth will be eaten away by moth and rust and decay. What things on earth will be in heaven? Nothing except those who do the will of God in his word; those who love their brothers and sisters in Christ; and those who do not love the things in the world, but love God’s promise of dwelling in heaven and delighting in all things there forever.

Joyful Fellowship with God

First, fellowship with the Incarnate Word; second, living in the light of the Word; and third, resisting sin by being in the Word. These are the only ways we can have joyful fellowship with God and Christ. We must take sin seriously because we are sinful by nature. All, no exceptions. Even us true Christians in the church. What are we to do? We must acknowledge our sinful nature and confess of our sins. When we do so, God assures us that he forgives and forgets. Faithful and just: this is his nature. He is true to his promises.

“Of the Father’s Love Begotten”

In the New Testament, the Son of God begets sons of God – children of God – when they believe in his name (John 1:12, 14). And when Christ returns, God would have accomplished what he had planned from creation: perfect communion between him and his adopted children in a new heaven and new earth where his people will dwell with him “evermore and evermore!”

Psalm 18:1-3; Matthew 7:21-29 September 16, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Christ was the Rock that followed Israel in the desert, giving them spiritual drink. Dear Congregation of Christ: Someone once said, “I believe in both a creative and personal God, a divinely ordered universe, that man has an innate moral sense, and that Jesus was a great moral teacher, perhaps the greatest the world has witnessed… I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus.” Was this person who wrote…

It’s always better to sing songs straight from Scripture, such as this one verse. In singing the Psalms and other songs in the Bible, we can be…

“Do Not Resist an Evil Person”

Leviticus 24:17-20; Psalm 69:22-28; Matthew 5:38–48 April 22, 2018 •  Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: This morning, I start with a few quotes: (1) from the conservative National Association of Evangelicals, “Ezekiel 33 says, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.’ … If someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation.” (2) from the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., “The use of the death penalty tends to brutalize the society that condones…

Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness

Psalm 1:1-6; Matthew 5:1-12 (text) February 25, 2018 •  Download this sermon (PDF) Beloved Congregation of Christ: Our text this morning, commonly known as the Beatitudes, is usually preached as a set of moral values for which we must strive. The Beatitudes is not about an ideal character in an ideal, future utopia. But it is about life in the kingdom of heaven even in the midst of this fallen, sinful world. Here’s a quote from a sermon: “The poor, the trampled, the voiceless, the seekers of righteousness, the…
