True Discipleship

Matthew 10:1-42 October 14, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: We’ve been going through the Gospel of Matthew for a few months now. Chapters 1-4 tell us about Jesus: his miraculous birth by a virgin woman; his ordination by God at his baptism, and his temptation in the wilderness by the devil. In Chapters 5-7, he teaches his disciples about the kingdom of heaven and how they are live as kingdom people. Then in Chapters 8-9, we read about the signs and wonders and miracles…

Miracles, Faith and Service: Grumbling Against Jesus’ Divinity

Exodus 34:1-7; Matthew 8:23-27; 9:1-38 September 30, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: Last Sunday, in Matthew 8, we learned that Jesus performed miracles for several reasons. First, he announced that with his arrival, the kingdom of God has also arrived (Matt 10:7–8). A second purpose of the miracles is to demonstrate that faith is the instrument by which a person enters the kingdom of heaven. In the healing of the leper and the centurion’s servant, faith was instrumental. Here in Chapter 9, we read…

Only Two Ways to Live (Part 2)

Psalm 18:1-3; Matthew 7:21-29 September 16, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Christ was the Rock that followed Israel in the desert, giving them spiritual drink. Dear Congregation of Christ: Someone once said, “I believe in both a creative and personal God, a divinely ordered universe, that man has an innate moral sense, and that Jesus was a great moral teacher, perhaps the greatest the world has witnessed… I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus.” Was this person who wrote…

Honor Authorities

Exodus 20:12; John 19:25-27; Romans 13:1-7; Ephesians 6:1-4 September 9, 2016 (KSYC) • Download this article (PDF) In recent weeks, major liberal journalists and social media have compared violent American flag-burning protesters to soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy — all while downplaying the leftists’ violence. These protesters, known as “antifa” (short for anti-fascist), advocate communism and even anarchy, and have even been listed as a domestic terrorist movement by New Jersey. “Antifa” is made up of self-described anarchists — radical left-wing thugs who employ violence and intimidation to advance…

Three Kingdom Laws: The “Golden Rule”

Deuteronomy 16:18-20; Matthew 7:1-12 September 2, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Jesus is not being a racist here. He is talking about the spiritual state of unbelievers –dogs and pigs – who stubbornly refuse to repent of their sins and reject him and his gospel. Dear Congregation of Christ: Do you know that the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” was first written by George Eliot in an 1860 book called The Mill on the Floss? This familiar saying simply means that we shouldn’t judge something based…

Jesus Our Psalm-Singing Worship Leader

Psalm 118:1-29; Matthew 26:30-32; Hebrews 2:10-12 August 26, 2018 •  Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: Who among you are not familiar with the chorus, “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” This short song is from Psalm 118 verse 24, one verse out of 29 verses in our text. It’s always better to sing songs straight from Scripture, such as this one verse. In singing the Psalms and other songs in the Bible, we can be…

Bulletin: August 26, 2018, Using the New Trinity Psalter Hymnal

This Lord’s Day, we began using the new Trinity Psalter Hymnal, thanks to an anonymous donor from Immanuel’s United Reformed Church in Salem, Oregon. So I introduced this new songbook with a sermon from Psalm 118. I also discussed the new features and differences with the old Blue Psalter Hymnal during our Sunday School and before the worship service. A few did not like the changes, but Lord willing, everyone will get used to it. Change is always a process. So here’s the bulletin using the new song numbers…

The Temple Destroyed, Then Raised Up

Christ, the Church, and every Christian is God’s temple Amos 9:1-15; Acts 15:12-17 August 19, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: Concerning the end times, someone wrote, “the Antichrist will allow the religious Jews to rebuild the Temple and to initiate daily sacrifices… Now the rebuilding of the Temple constitutes an enormous political and religious problem, for the place the Bible decrees for the location of the Temple is currently occupied by the Dome of the Rock.” This was written by John Hagee, a well-known…

“Justice into Poison, Righteousness into Bitterness”

Amos 6:1-14; Ephesians 3:14-19 July 15, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: Once in a while, when listening to Pandora music, the 1960s song by the Rolling Stones, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction!” plays. This song was banned at first, then later, some of the words were censored because of sexual overtones. But it also expresses the writer’s frustration with our culture’s commercialism and materialism, telling everyone not to be satisfied with less, but always look for more, for the “new and improved.” And we see…

Not a Famine of Bread or Water, But of the Words of the LORD

Amos 8:1-14; John 6:53-58; 66-69 July 29, 2018 • Download this sermon (PDF) Dear Congregation of Christ: Before last year’s Super Bowl Sunday, a survey showed that 59 percent of churches who have Sunday evening services or other activities planned to continue as a normal Sunday. But 36 percent also said that they would adjust their schedules, including watching the game. My first experience of this American phenomenon was in the January 1977 Super Bowl between the Oakland Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings. The pastor of the Methodist Church…
